10 Questions to Ask Before Booking Car Storage
February 20, 2026
The Questions That Matter
Most people book car storage based on price and location. Then they discover things the facility didn't mention. These questions help you avoid the common surprises.
1. What are the exact dimensions of the space?
Ask for width, length, and height clearance — not just "single car garage." A lifted truck, oversized SUV, or a car with a roof rack may not fit where you think it will.
2. Is access 24/7 or are there restrictions?
Some facilities lock the building outside business hours. Others restrict after-hours access to gate code only. If you need your car at 2am on a Sunday, make sure that's actually allowed.
3. What happens if I need my car and it's after hours?
Some facilities require 24–48 hours notice for vehicle retrieval. This matters more than you think during an emergency.
4. What is the security setup?
Gated entry is standard. Ask about: cameras (are they monitored 24/7?), on-site staff presence, lighting, perimeter fencing, and whether the facility has had theft incidents in the past year.
5. Is there a camera system and who has access to footage?
If something happens to your vehicle, you want to know the footage exists and is retained. Ask for retention periods and access policies.
6. What happens if my vehicle is damaged while stored?
Get the damage liability policy in writing. Most facilities disclaim responsibility for damage caused by fire, theft, weather, or other tenants. Know what your own insurance covers before you need it.
7. Is there a grace period after my lease ends?
Many facilities charge 2–3x the daily rate for vehicles left after the lease ends. Others tow without notice. Know the policy before you're late on a payment.
8. Are battery charging services available?
Some facilities have dedicated battery tender hookups. Others don't. If you're storing long-term, battery drain is a real problem — knowing in advance saves a jump-start.
9. What are the pest prevention measures?
Rats and mice love stored cars. Ask if the facility has a pest control contract, whether they rodent-proof units, and if they do any prevention spraying.
10. Can I install a camera or lock on my unit?
Some facilities prohibit personal modifications. If you want to add your own battery tender, GPS tracker, or camera, check the lease first.
